About 70 years ago, in honour of the patron Saint San Jorge, women in Barcelona startet giving away books to their loved ones and received in return a red rose. The lovely tradition caught on in other regions of Spain as well, and is since then celebrated on the 23rd of April. The UNESCO has even declared the day World Book Day.
In order to incentivate reading, on April 23rd many bookshops in Spain offer special discounts. In Palma's city centre you can even find open-air stalls where you can browse to your heart's content. This year, in addition, Palma town hall has organized 3 special literary walks throughout the city centre. 6 actors read in several languages books by authors who have written stories about Mallorca. All walks last about 1 hour and start at 11am, 12.30pm, 5pm and 6.30pm at Plaza Cort, Playa Mayor and the Culture Centre Misericórdia at the end of the Ramblas promenade.
Like the gesture of giving away books & roses on World Book Day? Then take a look at the wide range of books available at amazon.co.uk: bestsellers, Mallorca guide books, children's books as well as audio books with Spanish classes. Enjoy!
